Something like: If you are a shugenja, gain and innate ability. If Bushi gain Katana of fine quality..... We had the same thing here. One guy rolled up a bushi that could cast a spell, had a tattoo from one of his parents and still had the Daisho Technique. We though it was a little silly. Still, if you and your GM are happy with it, have fun! Tattooed Akodo Dragon Basic idea of the deck is blitz attack, first turn personality, second turn tattoos and force boosters take a province, get another personality. third turn another province perhaps with the help of superior tactics, tactical maneuvers or centipede tattoo fourth turn build up or finish them off. all akodo sensei gives is the tactical maneuvers and white shore plains... these are GREAT cards, the change in personalities lets us also use strenght of purity. Rallys are really there for centipede rally. admitedly its sometimes handy with mitsu and other dragon tattooed personalities, but rally, centipede tattoo is devestating. Wether this is any better than tattooed deth (kaede sensei) or not I dont know. A lot of it relys on the right combinations of personalities strenght of purities + 3ph personalities, tactician cards with 3+ chi samurai, tattoos with tattooed personalities. But at the same time it does open up the fate deck to better cards. dynasty tattooed samurai 1 hitomi reju (4 gold) 1 hitomi tashima (5 gold) 3 togashi mitsu (5 gold) 3 togashi senai (his chi will go up with tattoos) (3 gold) samurai (iron mountain can tattoo them) 3 togashi mio (dragonfly tattooed, 3ph) (4 gold) 3 mirumoto uso (3ph) (4 gold) 3 mirumoto daini (3ph) (3 gold) tattooed (arent samurai and so never get tactician) 2 hitomi kazaq (4 gold) 2 hitomi iyojin (3 gold) 3 hitomi dajan (4 gold) gold structure 3 gold mines 3 small farms 3 large farms 1 charter of the dragon clan (the gold structure is based around the fact that really I want a first turn personality and maybe a second turn personality, if a small farm turns up in that time they can buy the large farms. All the farms benefit the ashigaru also. But the gold structure is iffy) regions 2 farmlands (I tend not to use this that often, spare gold is rare, but this is needed to overcome yogo towers) 1 golden sun plains events inheritance kisadas funeral(the only anti dishonour) iris festival fate side: akodo sensei ring of void force boosters: 3 charge 2 tattoo madness 3 mountain tattoo 3 dragon tattoo 3 white shore plains 3 strenght of purity 2 frenzy (these two spaces may change) 3 ashigaru (free follower) 1 warriors of the great climb 3 dragonfly tattoo (anti go home, with mio 6 units!) 3 centipede tattoo }maneuverability 3 tactical maneuvers 3 superior tactics 3 rallying cry Hitomi Hokosaki www.dragonstrategy.net From baz at thedragonclan.com Mon Jan 8 10:37:54 2001 From: baz at thedragonclan.com (Hitomi Hokosaki) Date: Sun May 11 20:37:23 2003 Subject: 4winds mechanics References: <003b01c07954$55331a00$290110ac@maeve> <004401c0795d$12096960$290110ac@maeve> Message-ID: <004c01c0795f$0eead960$290110ac@maeve> http://welcome.to/the_stronghold/ has some info on the 4 winds. I had an Iron Mountain Akodo deck play against a Water Monk deck and, when he announced an attack, I defended my GSP. The attacker then went to a province where I had a personality, and I "Tactical Maneuvers"'d over to that battle and immediately played a Deadly Ground, winning the battle and (because of it) the game as I counter-attacked and took 3 provinces. And I'd never play with the Exp. version which is probably the worst coaster personality in the game. (The basic one is at least playable if you are using Hiruma Dojos, but otherwise isn't too good either.) If you can get Uso or Yuyake, I'd recommend either of those. There have been 10 people in total. The other players I faced were two Scorpions and one Lion. Both Scorpions tried Dishonor and dishonered themselfs due to my Wind's Truths. The Lion was gold-screwed and never managed to marshall enough force for an attack. Well, I didn't mind. To help you all with this advice, these are a list of decks I -know- I will be facing: 01) Crane Iron Fortress Dueling (Toshimoko sensei) 02) Possibly two Crab Kaiu Walls robo-honor (Kaui Sensei) OR 03) Possibly two Shadowlands "Army of the Dead" (Yoshi Sensei, Sepulcher) 03) Unicorn military 04) Lion Honor runner (I beat it once in 5 games with this deck) 05) Scorpion Yogo Towers military 06) A possible Dragon Hitomi stronghold 07) Another Scorpion, or possibly Shadowlands, player 08) Two Naga decks (one really bad, using Gold that you have to pay for) 09) Phoenix honor 10) Possibly Hiruma "Jama Suru says you're Shadowlands" enlightenment (works wonderfuly) 11) Either Crane Kosaten Shiro Dueling or Crab O-Ushi Sensei Honor The Mirumoto Tactical School Strict Jade Format Goal: Military tricks with the ability to honor run if necessary Stronghold: Iron Mountain Sensei: Akodo Dynasty deck: (40 cards) -Holdings: 3 * Gold Mine 3 * Hiruma Dojo 3 * Small Farm 3 * Large Farm 3 * Jade Works 1 * Sanctified Temple -Events: Plague of Locusts (expecting lots of free holdings) As the Shadow Falls (slow down other honor runners) Slaughter of the Imperial Court (bow out lots of naga/crane) Wisdom Gained (saftey net vs Kisada's Funeral if I have to honor run) Inheritance -Regions: Golden Sun Plain -Personalities: 3 * Mirumoto Daini 3 * Mirumoto Uso 3 * Togashi Senai 3 * Mirumoto Bujin 3 * Agasha Gennai 2 * Kitsuki Kaagi 1 * Hitomi Reju Fate: (40 cards) -Senseis: Akodo -Tattoos: 3 * Dragon Tattoo 3 * Dragonfly Tattoo -Rings: Ring of Void -Actions 3 * In Search of the Future 3 * White Shore Plains 3 * Rallying Cry 3 * Superior Tactics 3 * Tactical Maneuvers 2 * The Sun Returns 1 * Master's Tactics 3 * Sneak Attack 3 * Counter Attack 3 * The Sun in Shadow 3 * Refugees 2 * Crushing Attack Avg focus value: 3.1 My biggest problem with this deck has been repeatedly bad draws - dynasty or fate end. I also am not convinced that Hoshi Sensei is the way to go, while it's amazing in the first few turns to get that jump in honor loss on your opponent, I am not so sure that Kaede wouldn't be a better choice. Because so much of dishonor relies on the fate deck and having cards in hand. With Gennai, Toturi is Drugged and Flattery, you should be able to drop the RoV turn 3 or 4. And against shadowlands that fate manipulation is a necessity as more than a few of your cards are going to be useless. But then others play right into the deck. Test of Honor and Force of will. I could also see running a Through the Flames or two. Free gold, Den of Spies, Savage Fields as a region is amazing, (then again, so is Sorrow's Path) **note- Sorrow's Path is my event for the month, it rules** Against Ninja, you could pack the Journal and the Coin, put those on one personality and go from there. I prefer running Kyuden Hitomi when doing dishonor, and under the SH usually goes Coin, Book, RoV, In Search of the Future and Come one at a Time. Dragon has amazing chi and you could be attacking Ninja turn 3. **also, it's all about the footsteps tech** Oh well, that's my take.....and here's my up dated deck listing..... Message-ID: <3.0.5.32.20010114022126.007a9540@mail.vt.edu> Dragon take 2nd AND 3rd in Blacksburg, VA! Despite the fact that classes do not start until next week, almost everyone in our usual L5R group participated to represent their clan in the Test of the Emerald Champion. However, I must apologize to all of you, my brothers and sisters, as one simple mistake cost a myself from claiming the title in my area - despite Mirumoto Uso defeating Doji Reju in the actual Test of the Emerald Champion. Clan Breakdowns were as follows: Crab: 3 (1 Kaiu, 1 A'Tok'Tuk, 1 Kisada) Crane: 1 (1 Toshimoko) Dragon: 2 (1 Toshimoko/Hantei, 1 Uona/Otomo) Lion: 2 (1 Hantei, 1 no sensei - explanations later) Naga: 2 (1 Yoshi, 1 no sensei) Scorpion: 3 (1 Yodin, 1 Yoshi, 1 Hantei) Unicorn: 1 (1 Yodin) The day for me actually started off about midnight as I had just gotten home from our local gaming store. I was having difficulty deciding upon a deck - Toturi's Army Honorable Blitz (due to my dual-alignment and it being their last legal tournament), Dragon Akodo Military, Dragon Dirty Tricks Dueling, or Scorpion Ratling (due to the alliance). After spending -3- hours debating on the matter, and considering each decklist, I decided to finally sleep on it. I had planned on awaking around 8:30 to give myself plenty of time to build a deck and get ready for the events of the day. As it turned out, I didn't wake up until 9:40 and didn't leave home until 10:45 - with things to start at noon. I arrived at the store, hurried, at 11:15 - 45 minutes early. Unforunately, I had to wait for one of our local Scorpion players to arrive to help with one of my decks. I had decided upon either Dirty Tricks Dragon or Scratling - my decision based on whether he remembered to bring his "Secrets on the Wind" or not. He arrived 15 minutes before things were -supposed- to start, and I was able to get one off of him, bringing me to two for my deck. Not where I -wanted- to be, but enough that they were playable. In lack of a third, I added (perhaps wisely) the Mirumoto Wakizashi. Due to "gamer time", no one arrived until about 12:30 and the event did not start off until 1 PM. Lots were drawn, and the games begun. Round 1 - Iron Mountain w/ Toshimoko Sensei vs Kaiu Walls w/ Kaui Sensei I knew, entering this game, that things would be tight. I had faced several Open Format Kaiu Sensei decks in the past, and lost horribly to all. My typical luck, no matter what deck I was using, was to be around 20 honor at the end of my turn and be ahead by 12, only to be at 28 honor next turn... and down by 2? So I knew this would be tight. And to make matters worse, my Plague of Locusts would hit only Small Farms - his and mine. At this point, my nerves kicked in and we began the first turn. I revealed a Wisdom Gained, Yogo Shidachi, Small Farm, and Sanctified Temple. Not a great start, given what I drew in the way of gold, but I cleared three provinces. However, my Fate hand was near-phenominal. -2- Force of Wills, the Wind's Truth, Secrets on the Wind, and *gasp* Judgement! My opponent revealed his provinces - a Small Farm and no other gold - then played Yasuki Taka with Shiryo no Yasuki, and I began to worry some. My next turn - Test of the Emerald Champion (with no one in play), Agasha Gennai, and a Gold Mine. I get the gold and play Shidachi. A wise move considering my next turn: Plague of Locusts, Hiruma Doji, and Mirumoto Bujin all appear. At the end of the turn, I have all three Force of Wills, all three Wind's Truth, Secrets on the Wind, and Judgement in my hand. On my turn, I play Gennai, the Gold Mine, and Bujin - all without Honor - and Shidachi gets the Favor. On my next turn, Gennai received a "Force of Will", and switched Taka's Chi and Force, killing him. From here on out, my start just gets better and better and I start honor running - using Judgement, Tests of Honor, 1 Iaijutsu Challenge (Yoshi flipped the other two away), all three of my Wind's Truth, and Secrets on the Wind to keep his honor in check long enough to give me a real edge. Finally, despite no personalities, the Kaiu deck starts cranking out massive honor a turn with Defenders of the Wall on Barracks - no point in attacking because I'd just lose. The next thing I know, Crab is at 35 honor and I'm at 34. Then my Dynasty deck reveals.... Mirumoto Daini, Mirumoto Yuyake, Yogo Shidachi, and Imperial Gift. With a Sanctified Temple in play and enough gold to get everything for honor, I win at 43. A very tight game, despite the early goings - as I expected. 1-0 - opponent 0-1 Round 2 - Kaiu Walls w/ Kisada Sensei What is it with Crab? I face off against Kisada Sensei Crab, and just shake my head some. I never had any designs of attacking with my deck. There wasn't really much to note of this game, as my draws were just perfect - Daini 2nd turn, 2 Iaijutsu Duels and CoaaT in my hand. This I eventually drew 2 Iaijutsu Challenges as well, ending the game with 43-4 honor in about 5-10 minutes. The Crab player never had enough gold to play anyone for honor, so he could not refuse my duels. 2-0 - opponent 1-1 Round 3 - Yogo Towers w/ Yoshi Sensei Finally something different - though not what I really wanted to play against. Yoshi Sensei Scorpion with Towers of the Yogo. He checks for "Take", and doesn't draw it. In the early goings, my opponent got an early advantage - so far as to get Kachiko early. However, my Test of the Emerald Champion also went off early - and I won the duel, removing Mirumoto Daini from the game. I could almost see my deck stalling at one point, before Kachiko came out, as my honor wasn't that high and I didn't have a lot of gold in play. Then, I drew Judgement - with Secrets on the Wind in my hand, another Bujin in play, and Shidachi in play. My first "target" was Kachiko, quickly eliminating that threat. Soon, my Test of Honors started appearing, and the Scorpion army started disappearing. My opponent, seeing no end to this madness, conceeded defeat. 3-0 - opponent 2-1 Round 4 - Shadow Stronghold of the Bayushi w/ Yodin Sensei Not again... 2 Scorpions in a -row-! Only this one is playing Yodin Sensei with the Shadow Stronghold of the Bayushi - and both did me in. Rather than Sneak/Deadly, I experienced Sneak/Crush. Rather than play a lot or personalities early due to a great gold start, I could only play one a turn as I Test of Honored 2 Panekis and Eiyo early, and Force of Willed Kachiko away. The Crushing Attack did me in, and I lost via Military, unable to defend myself properly. I had thought about not defending the battle - and should have stuck with that instinct. I still did well, though, getting to 30 honor before losing. 3-1 - opponent 3-1 Round 5 - Iron Mountain w/ Uona Sensei Shame of shames, I am forced to play against my own clansmen - who is one of five 3-1s to make the round (Naga, Crane, Scorpion being the other three). And we're both playing the same stronghold, so it all comes down to a fate cut - which we have to recut twice before I finally win. My start was near-perfect, and Test of the Emerald Champion appeared again with myself having noone in play. However, despite early luck, my opponent puts me on edge. He's playing a weapon deck with Star Filled Steel and Mastersmiths... and lo and behold, Mirumoto Taki is 3/3 with Lion Tattoo, a Master Smith token, and a Bloodsword. Rather than duel Shidachi, he chooses Gennai - and I strike. Taki gets really big and attacks, I send him home with the favor. On my next turn, I draw a card with the Favor and draw Secrets on the Wind. I attach it to Shidachi, attach a Force of Will to Gennai - then switch Taki's Force and Chi. Eventually, my Test of Honors and Walk the Ways start showing up, and I kill off more Takis with similar equipment, Mirumoto Dainis with Master Smith tokens, and Mirumoto Usos. I don't remember the honor totals, but despite being dropped to 2 Provinves, I still win. 4-1 - opponent 3-2 Finally, after nearly 30 minutes of working out a tie breaker to determine which of three players who finished 3-2 take the fourth spot (there were four 3-2s, but one left thinking he was out), the games begin: Uona Dragon vs Toshimoko Crane and myself vs Yoshi Naga. Semifinals: Hidden Heart of Shinomen Forest w/ Yoshi Sensei The Naga player's route was probably the most difficult to this round, having faced a Hantei Scorpion deck that went 2-3, a Yodin Scorpion deck that went 3-2, defeating the sole Crane player who was 4-1, and Kaiu Crab who went 3-2. My path was a bit easier based on record, but perhaps more difficult given the closeness of 4 games during the early goings - even the one I lost. This was a game I was not looking forward to. I knew he was packing Oracle of Earth, because he always does - making his Deadly Grounds undestroyable. After spending a moment debating between Hantei sensei and Toshimoko, I chose Toshimoko from fear of losing the ability to use In Search of the Future. It never became an issue, as my fate draw was near-perfect, and I was able to honor run from what of my duels were irrefusable, saved my army from Pearl Magic with a Witch Hunt, test of honored and dishonored several Naga, and finally won - 41 to -11 while only losing 2 provinces. 5-1 - opponent 4-2. Finals: Iron Fortress of the Daidoji w/ Toshimoko Sensei We took about a 45 minute break before this game began as the store's new Games Workshop rep came in with the Tyranid boxed army and the Tyranid Codex (which comes with the boxed army). 'Nid players, you're in for a treat. You may not be happy with everything (no Fleet of Foot or transport - sorry) but you'll like what you see. And the new Tyranid Warriors, Carnifex, Biovores, and Gargoyles look fantastic! For those who care, I'll talk a little more about it over private e-mail. No point in spamming up this place with another game. Both decks had taken similar paths to get to this point, the Crane player facing (and losing to) the Naga player I played earlier, a Yodin Unicorn deck that was -winless- despite being a Bergstrom-style deck, the Yoshi Scorpion I faced earlier, Hantei Scorpion, the Kisada Crab deck I faced earlier, and finally our brother using Uona Sensei (who used Otomo Sensei vs Kaiu Crab for a win). Anyway, we sat down to find out which clan truely was the better duelist. During the break, I nervously contemplated switching out Toshimoko Sensei for Hantei - to remove Kanshinzen or Iaijutsu Challenge. Unfortunately for my opponent, I had playtested several decks against his so knew his like the back of my hand whereas he knew nothing of mine. When we finally sat down, everyone applauded when I finally decided to reveal Toshimoko Sensei. We would decide this like true samurai. 1st turn.... Inheritance, Mirumoto Uso, Hitomi Iyojin, Small farm! Only thing better would have been real gold and Golden Sun Plain instead of Iyojin. After a few moments of debating clearing 4 provinces, I chose 3 - and got Uso for honor. Next turn, I grabbed the favor and started to take off, getting little gold but a decent ammount of honor from personalities. Then, it happened - his Test of the Emerald Champion appeared first. The participants: Daidoji Reju vs Mirumoto Uso. In a spectacular display, Uso managed to overcome Reju by about 4 pts and claim the title as the Emerald Champion... at least, as far as the game was concerned. Unfortunately, Kakita Kaiten appeared, looking for revenge a few turns later - and chose Agasha Genna and Mirumoto Yuyake as his targets - Gennai first. Rather than focus, I chose to strike in both duels - and he gained 16 honor in one turn. This was my mistake, as next turn, he jumped from 35 to 40 for the win - while I sat at 27 - but not before dueling Yogo Shidachi. Not truely caring, I started to plop down cards from my hand in an attempt to Focus. I must admit, my brothers, my lack of faith was my downfall as had I focused with either Gennai or Yuyake, I would have won the duel. Kaiten's focus upon calling the strike: 24. Yogo Shidachi? Had I not just "played cards" from not caring, and bothered to look at my hand, Shidachi - at 2 chi - would have tied Kaiten with a 24. Instead, I focused a Superior tactics over Force of Will because I wasn't paying attention, and focused a 23. The 24 -included- Kaiten's +3 chi bonus and a +6 chi bonus from Sensei. Shidachi - no bonus. Needless to say, I deserved to lose that game due to my lack of faith in myself. Final Record: 5-2. Opponent 6-1. Final records for all players: Crane - Iron Fortress w/ Toshimoko Sensei: 6-1 (1st) Dragon - Iron Mountain w/ Toshimoko Sensei: 5-2 (2nd) Dragon - Iron Mountain w/ Unoa/Otomo Sensei: 4-3 (3rd) Naga - Hidden Heart w/ Yoshi Sensei: 4-3 (4th) Scorpion - Shadow Stronghold w/ Yodin Sensei: 3-2 (5th) Crab - Citadel of Hiruma w/ A'Tok'Tuk Sensei: 3-2 (5th) Crab - Kaiu Walls w/ Kaiu Sensei: 3-2 (5th) Lion - Ancient Halls w/ no sensei: 2-3 (8th) -Kudos to this player as she had just learned to play the night before, played 2 games with "Storms over Matsu Palace" Unicorn, then finished 2-3 with a borrowed deck she knew nothing about. I must say that many of you here have been very helpful in leading to the design of this deck - going so far as for me to steal ideas from the duelers and from "Bitter Judgement" in order help this deck excell. When I first sat down today, I expected to flop horribly - only to surprise myself. Clan: Dragon Stronghold: Iron Mountain Purpose: Basically, this deck is a dueler that tries to make life as annoying as possible for my opponent, by taking many actions to rid myself of troublesome personalities - keeping their honor in check in the process so that I am always higher. Message-ID: <3.0.5.32.20010114072126.0079c3c0@mail.vt.edu> Dragon take 2nd AND 3rd in Blacksburg, VA! To make a long and tragic story short, I faced 3 attacks all day. One was an Ambush that failed to kill its target (Yodin). I lost three provinces total, won every game by enlightenment and had some of the best draws in a long time. Only real scares were seeing Otomo in the TA game (but drawing 3 rings in my first 7 cards handled it well, Forgotten Lesson handled the rest) and the one Shadowlands attack phase that took all my defensive cards and left me with only 2 provinces. I don't just mean to the victors, but anyone who went out and tried. Heck my last GST ended with me around 9th out of 12. Some days, it is just not your day :(. Now, I decided to put together a dishonor deck Friday Night. After losing 4 out of 6 to a Taka's Tricks, and losing another one to a Crab military, I was really excited to go to the tourney the next day, NOT ;)!! I felt in my heart that I would play Dishonor better than a Tat deck, and knew in my head that the potential was there. I just needed to get the last few cards nailed down. Luckily for me, I knew MaPhi would be there, and he is a very good player who knows dishonor well (Congrats publically for the 2nd at Heidelberg, no shame in losing to Michael as you know). I grabbed him quick and made him give me some pointers. I am glad he did. You see I needed all the help I could get, we had 26 show up to play. Yes Nuernberg Germany got 26 players despite all the uncertainty surrounding L5R. I attribute that to a dedicated demo team (me) and even more dedicated tourney organizers (Markus and Andy). As I am not real big on round by round stuff I will skip it, hey it is my report :). I will say the coolest part of the day was that of the 6 Dragons in the Tourney (I am pretty sure that is the right number), we would not fight each other. Twice when we got paired against each other we talked the Judges in to allowing a draw (Yes, I know it is not legal, but we just explained we would take the time alloted and make sure it was a dead heat :)). I just love that aspect of this game. Here in the second round two Dragon players (me and my good friend) who both still managed to go on into the final eight, hurt their immediate chances, to do the right thing. One other pairing occured later, and I do not know if it hurt either of their chances to go on. I just love Family :). So the bottom line was I came out of the Swiss rounds with a 3-1-1 record and was seeded 5th. My only loss was to a Unicorn/Kolat/Taeruko Militray/Honor runner. I got a fair start, he got Taeruko and was just too strong. My quarter-final game was a no contest. The poor Phoenix guy got the worst draw I have ever seen. I still feel bad for the dude. My Semi-final game was against the Unicorn/Kolat/Taeruko guy. I got a bad start (by the sixth turn, I have two small farms as my only gold still :() and he got Taeruko to start... . This was one of the ugliest games ever for me, and not just because of the cards :(. So in the consolation game I get a gift of playing a corrupted Scorpion Military deck. The guy is a terrific player, and his deck was blazingly fast. But if he played a long slow game, and played out his whole dynasty deck, he would have inflicted 42 points of honor loss to himself. He basically helped me to victory. So I get third out of 26, and like that I played a clean deck honorably. The final results, 1) Unicorn 2) Phoenix 3) Dragon 4) Scorpion Here is the deck... Kyuden Hitomi Dynasty: Doji Shizue x3 Togashi Shiseken x3 Hitomi Nakuso x3 Agasha Gennai x3 Mirumoto Danai x3 Togashi Yoshi Black Market x3 (okay not the cleanest card in the world, but still HDM tolerable ;)) Small Farm x3 Gold Mine x3 Den of Spies x3 Jade Works x2 Dragon Charter Golden Sun Plain Iris Festival Suspicions As the Shadow Falls Death of Ki-Rin Chrysantheum Festival Imperial Gift Inheiritence Doom of the Brother Hood Emporer's Peace Moon and Sun (when this card worked it was amazing) Fate: Otomo Senseii Kisada Senseii RoV (Under SH) Bitter (Under SH) Rise from the Ashes (Under SH) Secrets on the Wind (Under SH) Double Agent (Under SH) Judgement Rise from the Ashes x2 Secrets on the Wind x2 Force of Will x2 The Wind's Truth x3 I Challenge x3 C1@aT x3 Shame x3 Breach of Etiquette x3 (only one in the opening draw all day) Command of the Kami x3 Refugees x2 Unrequitted Love x2 Test of Honor x2 Lessons of Honor x2 My only other comments are that in hindsight the trouble I had with the Taka's tricks is based on holding honor running decks. I would sub in Hidden Emporer, and maybe Kisada's Funeral, and definitrly some Deeds not Words. Other than that the deck was decent, I was lucky, and thanks MaPhi :). I am attempting to compile data on all of the tournaments worldwide and would like, if possible, for all of you to send me the following information via private e-mail: 1) The locations of the tournaments you played in 2) The dates of the tournaments you played in 3) The number of players in the tournament 4) If possible, the clan breakdown (Ex. 3 nagas, 2 monks, etc) 5) 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place I know some of you may not have gotten this information, and that is understandable, but the more of it you are able to give me, the more likely any data I compile will be as accurate as possible. If I get time, I will post this information on my website - www.geocities.com/blazingeagle.geo From hinoryu at mediaone.net Sun Jan 14 12:54:04 2001 From: hinoryu at mediaone.net (Jared) Date: Sun May 11 20:37:26 2003 Subject: [HDM] re: TotEC tournament report Message-ID: <001801c07e52$fd14f100$8a5c8018@ne.mediaone.net> Agasha Shukuen fights for the Dragon, a second place victory in a field of 36. Well, I made the executive decision that enough is enough and tossed away my ultra winning Phoenix deck at 12 midnight the day before the tourney. I just said to myself what the hell I wanna have some fun. So I pooled a bunch of cards together and built a horde deck...at 1am. Next morning my friend Ralph (playing Unicorn dueling) and I headed up to Gardner, MA home to some of the largest tourney pullouts in the world! As I arrived at the tourney and played my shadowlands deck I didnt feel right, so with quick speed (about 10 minutes before the tourney starts) I build a Dragon dishonor/honor deck. I had to trade for an Iron Mountain SH even! But the deck seemed solid, and the atitude I go into the tourney with is, Im gonna lose and like it. Round 1 Taka's Trix (with some sensei) I break out quick Hiruma Dojo/small farm combo. But it isnt quick enough. I dont have a secrets in the opening draw and his Taka's come out quick and early along with his Empty Cravases and PPGs. I am able to hold him off for a while but he speeds to victory. 0-1 Round 2 Taka's Trix (w/o Taka) I wonder what his deck does, but it aparently lacks personalities or has almost none as he grabs a barracks and begins to attach followers. I grab an early honor lead and hold him down with (TWT+Breach). I cruise to a safe honor victory. 1-1 Round 3 Ratling Crab Attack (I have the bad luck of being paired with 3 out of the 4 crabs at the tournament in the first 4 rounds) I make the only major mistake of the day, by actually using my Hantei Sensei (which should have been an Otomo Sensei) and he hits my secrets on the wind. I cant bring him down quick enough and he rolls over my provinces with ease. 1-2 Feeling pretty good right now about achieving my goal of losing a lot. My friend Ralph is at 2-1 and looking good. Round 4 Unicorn military w/Yodin Sensei I come out early and get a break with some early dishonor tricks. I am able to hold down the number of personalities she has in play and control the game by disallowing any province destruction. I slowly move to an honor victory. Kisada's Funeral resolves and I am forced to go military (because I have more force at this point) and I win by honor. 2-2 Round 5 Lion Military w/Akodo Sensei I am able to get a much quicker start, and dominate with duels and PKill. I cruise to an honor victory. 3-2 Round 6 Ralph! We are both at 3-2 records. The TO says he is taking top 16 which means if we draw we'll both get in. We draw and go eat. 3-2-1 Top 16 Kevin Hall Dragon dishonor Kevin is a good friend and we both know our decks well. We both know the game will depend on the early draw. I grab a first turn Reju exp and he grabs gold. He promptly tries to test the Reju and I flip a Come one at a time. "Bitch take that OOOOOHOOHOHOHOH ya" I scream.....Kevin laughs and so do I. I look over at Ralph's game....hes down 2 provinces to 4 against a shadowlands deck and basically at his starting honor. I smile. The Reju being alive allows me to challenge his early shugenja and control any dishonro he could throw my way. I bring him down quickly, and he goes into the negitives. Ralph is down to one province. I smile again. Kevin dies to the dishonor machine of Dens+shame. I look over at Ralphs game Iris Festival in the last province, we all laugh together. HA! 4-2-1 Top 8 Tim Lion attack w/ a sensei card This game was fun, for me. Its highlight being the fact that the only personalities I let him keep alive were 2 Ikoma Gujins, not that he was dishonored at all, but all his personalities kept dying, except 2 Gujins. It was funny. I cruise to an honor victory. 5-2-1 Well screw that losing thingy....Im winning now and stuff. Top 4 Johanna Fox Ratling attack We both start out decently, and I am able to get some dishonor going and she destories a province. I am able to come one at a time the next ralting attack which gives me control over the game. I dishonor her quickly, but she destories my den of spies and holds herself at -17. I quickly begin running for honor, a few Iaijutsu duels later I reach 40 with 3 provinces. 6-2-1 Finals Monkey honor runner This game was sooo close. My opponent was soo tried and so was I. A first turn Test of the Emerald Championship on his side, pisses me off. I promptly give him the finger jokingly we both smile. No emerald champion this day. I come out quick and the dishonor holds him a few below me each turn. However, he remembers that dens can be destored midgame and the dishonor stops working. I try to keep up, but I cant get to any Iaijutsu challenges. I attack and kill a province but it isnt enough. He cruises to 40 1 turn ahead of me. 6-3-1 Luck and a small amount of skill score a second for the Dragon! Good news -- I won the Lexington, KY TotEC. I didn't expect to at all -- my buddy Drew Flynn was playing the nastiest Crane deck I've ever seen (and I've seen quite a few) and, after he trounced me in the Swiss, I somehow managed to pull it out in the final. Report forthcoming. However, my family lost its internet access until today (the day before I head back to school -- go figure). I'm sorry I wasn't around to annoy everyone with my advice right before the tournament. Is there any news on how well we're doing? And does anyone have the digest for the past 3 or 4 days that they could forward to me? I'm very interested in any reports that may have been put up on the list. I was the only Dragon there (out of 14 players total), and played a defensive dueling deck (decklist to follow the report). I got to the tournament early to trade for the Tests of Honor I needed. I get two, and I have the opportunity to borrow another one for the tournament, but decide that two should be enough. I wish I'd gone with the third, but it didn't turn out too badly. First round I face Ben, playing Naga with Hantei. He gets a slow start, and his only gold for the first three or four turns is a Silk Farm. I get some good gold and start bringing out people. Test of Honor and I.Challenge/Force of Will kill two Naga Shugenjas, as a third sits in a province. By the time he gets enough out to Hantei C1@aT and mount a good attack, it's too late. Second round I go against Adrian and his CTB deck. Having playtested against him with the same decks, I'm pretty sure going into this that I'm going to lose unless he makes some sort of major mistake. I have Reju start teaching him some Lessons of Honor early on (the turn after he flipped Kolat Duplicate :), and I'm pretty sure that the only way I can beat him is by dishonoring him out, but my deck's not exactly geared towards that aspect. He takes two provinces quickly. I block his next attack, and lose my guy but play the Ring of the Earth. Next turn, he flips Enemy of my Enemy...and only attacks with nine total force. I look at the two Strengths of Purity in my hand and the two Usos on the table and consider blocking. If he's got a charge and I don't block, I lose the province, but if he's got action-stoppers and I do block he'll be that much farther from a dishonor-loss...I roll a die and decide not to block. Turns out he just didn't notice the Ring until after he declared attackers, so I'm safe. I go up to 29 on my next turn, and draw my first Wind's Truth of the game. I look at the Deeds, Not Words in my hand, and my five unbowed personalities (including a shugenja). He Hanteis I.Duel and attacks with everybody next turn (after I Deeds him). I block with four guys, leave Yoshi back, and steal the 12 honor he gains from crushing my army, winning the game. Whew! Third round I play Jeremy's Crab Honor deck. I'm scared stiff of O-Ushi sensei, until he flips Tetsuya Sensei...I don't attack him the whole game. I get out lots of gold early on, and go crazy buying people. TWT makes an appearance, and I reach 40 quickly....at which point there is a dispute over my current honor total. He thinks I should still be at 35. I don't see much difficulty with this, as I'm in a pretty good position and he's still in the teens for honor, so I go along with it and go down to 35. It takes a turn longer than I thought it would, but I win anyway. He didn't see a PPG the whole game. Fourth round, I face Warren, the only other undefeated player. He's playing Spirit Military with Kaede sensei. I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose this, but 3-2 is guaranteed in already, so it doesn't really matter. Again I have Reju start teaching Lessons quickly, and I kill off a Sagoten with I.Challenge. He was already at -10 when I played the lessons, so it keeps him from getting out some of his more corrupt cards, but he knocks me down to two provinces without going below -15. He finally pulls another Sagoten when I have no PK in my hand, and I'm at somewhere around 15 honor with one province, so I concede. Fifth round I go against Kelly's Yodin-Lion deck. We never attack each other, so of course I draw every anti-military card in my deck. He gets out a Sanctified Temple before I do and gets control of the favor, and maintains his lead until he hits 40. But, with 14 players and cut to the top 8, I get in at 3-2 comfortably. I get paired up with Jeremy again, and this game mirrors the first, with the exception that he gets a better dynasty draw this game. I get the fat gold again, and we both start racing up to 40. I end my turn at 38 honor, planning to TWT enough honor to win on my turn. He has Dashmar sitting in a province, and has a decent chance of going up to enough honor to win on the turn after if I can't. He's holding two Sun in Shadows. I'm holding three Wind's Truths. I win. Semifinals I face Kelly again. I do a little better this game, but he goes military on me this time. He takes two provinces with Superior Tactics very quickly. I'm so focused on defending myself I don't realize what his honor is at until he hits 40. Kelly and Warren play for first, and it's left to me and Adrian to play for third. I'm pretty sure he's not going to give me a chance this game, so I offer him the koku and one of the packs from the third-place prize if he'll concede to me. He accepts. Kelly beats Warren. Warren points out that his strategy for the day was "Don't play Yodin." The top three are 1. Lion, 2. Spirit, 3. Dragon. From mazinman at yahoo.com Sun Jan 14 20:43:53 2001 From: mazinman at yahoo.com (David Rodriguez) Date: Sun May 11 20:37:26 2003 Subject: PR Test Reportr with Message-ID: <20010115044353.590.qmail@web123.yahoomail.com> Well, the Test came and went. This was the tournaments with the most surprises for myself since they started holding them down here. I was playing a slighty different version of a Dragon Dueler. It used Uona Sensei (great card, help me tremendously) instead of Toshimoko since I only had six samurai in the deck (No Daini to boot. Blasphemy! :) ) and 12 shugies. I did not get to try it out a lot so I was not expecting much. Clan Breakdown: Dragon: 2(Me and a friend playing one of my decks) Scorpion: 3 (All three were military I think) TA: 1 Lion: 2 Shadowlands: 1 Crane: 1 Monks: 1 There was one more player but I do not remember what he played. Game 1: Scorpion (Norikazu Sensei) Short game. Only got two Gold Producing holdings. As fast as my deck is it can only go so far with that much gold. Still I managed to get myself to 30 honor with only that so I guess that is something positive I can say about the deck s far. He basically ran me over for a military victory. Game 2: Toturi's Army (Stupid !@#!@ no duel no fun Sensei :( ) Thankfuly I managed to get one of my three Yasus really quick which helped out my duels. A Hitsu-Do here and a Iaijitsu Challenge there and finally a nicely placed Come one at a Time cut down his army enough forme to cruise to a Honor victory. Game 3: Monks (Kaede Sensei) Imperial Edicts is a beautiful card. He started of quick with money and magic people but I managed to cancel two of his three Finding the Harmonys with my Edicts. It finally came down to him needing only the Earth ring to win but did not have a Finding left to bring it down. I was at over 40 honor. He had two Armor on Osano-Wo on his personalities and attacked. However he forgot to fetch his Ring of Earth with Kaede Sensei first so he could do nothing when he took the providence. I felt bad for him. Losing because of a mistake always hurts. As I was about to find out. :( Game 4: Same Scorpion. Sigh..... it's always the little things. This time I got gold and honor runned like a madman. Ran like crazy except for one turn when I forgot to use a Sanctified Temple. I got to 44 then he hit me with a Breach. Had I not forgotten to use the temple I would have still have been over 40 and won. But alas I still lost. :( Well at 2-2 I figured that heading to the final four was a imposibility so I began to pack up. Game 5: Different Scorpion (No Sensei) WHAT!? I'm in the top 4! This took me totally by surprise. I guess there were only one 4-0 and 2 3-1 so the highest ranking 2-2 made it in. Wow! Didn't exect that! I got matched up with another military Scorpion. Oh well, at least this time I can actually use my Events. I lose a early battle cause my brain unfortunately turned off and I forgot that Kachiko exp 3 had a good ability. Fortunately Yasu compelled her to accept a Iaijitsu Challenge and we went back to a stalemate. I got hit by two Breaches before I managed to get the favor but my deck gains honor very easily so it was no real problem(Yasu and Chosai were never problems for my deck, 10 honor is a snap). Clutch Dueling by Yasu and Chosai keep me close. Finally, after being extremely close all game, I found myself with three providences, one of them with a Mystic Ground and myself well over 40 honor. It was over. At this point I figured I got third. Wrong. With the other 3-1 losing to the 4-0 Scorpion (the one that there defeated me twice) there were two 3-2s and I wound up being the top ranked of the two thanks to my 200+ honor total. So I managed to get 2nd place and the award for the individual with the most honor. With Scorpion getting first is was not a bad day for the Alliance. :) - Shuyjo. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo!
