Well, with Kyuden Hitomi, the choice is not really Kaede. If you bow your SH to ring-fish with Kaede, you lose your access to the cards under the SH. Big problem, that. I'd recommend either switching strongholds or staying away from Kaede. Other possible Sensei if you stick with Kyuden Hitomi include Hantei Sensei, Kisada Sensei, etc. > Also, what should I put under the SH? > > Kyuden Hitomi/Sensei unknown > > 1 Imperial Gift > 1 Wisdom Gained You may want to think about tossin in an inheritance if you have one, free gold never really hurts any deck. Plus, events are faster than personalities or holdings. Also consider tossing in a defensive or anti-honor event such as Emperor's Peace, or Time of the Void. > 1 Charter of the Dragon Clan > 1 Fortress of the Dragonfly This is really not going to do you any good. I'd pitch the Fortress. Charter is always good though. > 3 Gold Mine > 3 Jade Works > 3 Small Farm > 3 Hiruma Dojo Egad! Looking at your personalities, you don't have nearly enough samurai to make those Hiruma Dojos REALLY worth the while. And your gold scheme is too small for the number of personalities you've got. I'd councel dropping personalities and adding holdings (23 peeps is WAY too many, even if they are all cheap-chance of being "gold-screwed" is absurd with that many). A fairly good gold scheme for dragon enlightenment would be: 3x Gold Mine 3x Small Farm 3x Merchant Caravan 3x Large Farm 3x Corrupt Gold Mine This gold chain is more versatile, and quicker. > 1 Farmlands This won't do you enough good to warrant its inclusion. I'd go with Mystic Ground, or maybe Clan Heartland/Tidal Landbridge or the like. Mystic ground is nice defense against military, if you pack enough Shugenja and monks. And Dragon Enlightenment should be ALL shugenja and monks. No reason to use a samurai at all. > 3 Agasha Tamori Good. > 2 Hitomi Akuai > 1 Hitomi Dajan > 1 Hitomi Tashima XP > 1 Kitsuki Mizuochi > 3 Mirumoto Daini > 3 Mirumoto Yuyake > 1 Togashi Hoshi XP2 > 3 Togashi Mio > 2 Togashi Shinseken > 3 Togashi Senai Okay, in general, your personality selection isn't spectuacular for enlightenment. Shugenja are key to a good enlightenment strategy in the current playscene. Let me make some recommendations of good Dragon Shugenja: Agasha Tamori-you've already picked up on him, he's nice. His virtual 5C is awesome for Chi based spells and Kihos. Agasha Gennai - this guy is MVP in a lot of great Dragon decks. His trait of discarding for more cards is incredibly useful, helps get a void ring, and can allow you to cycle your hand for what you need. Togashi Yoshi- It's the fire ring in a can! Innate Void strike, what more need be said? Togashi Shinseken- 0/3 for 4G with a '-' HR and 2 PH. He's great. Tamori Chosai- His HR is a bit high, being gold legal, but he's a 1/4 for 4 with 2PH. Worth considering if you elect to swap SH, though you might be better served borrowing out of clan shuggies. Hitomi Nakuso - 1/3 for 5 with '-'HR and 2PH. He's great. Ability rocks too. PLUS, he's tattooed, meaning he's just DANDY for doing Dragon tattoo stupid FETA tricks. I'd probably use 3x everyone above, save chosai, who I might not bother with just due to his high HR. > 3 Come One At A Time > 2 Contentious Terrain > 3 Counterattack > 3 Dragon Tattoo > 2 Dragonfly Tattoo > 3 Entrapping Terrain > 2 Iaijutsu Art > 2 Rallying Cry > 1 Refugees > 2 Snow Crane Tattoo > 3 Superior Tactics > 1 Toturi is Drugged I see a lot of the vestiges of this deck's military/honor days in here. You're going to need to focus much more on putting rings out and just staying alive. You'll also want some serious fate manipulation to search your deck. Recommendations: More Walking the Way- Expensive, but specific. Banish All Shadows-less precise than Walking the Way, but still an incredibly good card. Next...you don't need so many tattoos. If you're gonna use finding the Cheese, Drop the Dragonfly. You also don't need all this duelling tech. I'd say pitch the Snow Crane tattoos, as well as Judgement and the mirumoto Wakizashi below, and instead sub in some more stay-alive cards. Duelling is handled by Yoshi. Rise from the Ashes is a virtual necessity these days, and buys you time to win your way. Flattery and Toturi is Drugged are also good, given that they're good for defense and let you empty your hand to play void. You might want some anti-honor cards as well, perhaps some Deeds, not Words. And in general, more defense is usually a good thing, like BSL and Refugees. > 1 Judgment > 1 Mirumoto Wakizashi As I said above, you'll probably want to pitch these. They won't do you so much good. If you're deadset on duelling, which I can understand, being a duelling addict myself, you might want to consider the Kiho "Facing your Devils". It gets you towards air and Fire all at once. :) > 2 Finding the Harmony If you got 3, pack three. > 1 Force of Will > 1 Secrets on the Wind > 1 Walking the Way Force of Will and Secrets are better left to duelling dishonor/honor decks. You might want to think about a spell like Amnesia, just in case your opponent Hantei's Rise or Finding. Keeps you from having to worry about that. Sorry if that commentary got kinda' vague after the personalities section, but I'm sort of in a rush and on my way somewhere else, so this is all I have time to think/type now. Good luck! Anyone who swallows that deserves what they wind up doing to themselves. NEWS FLASH! WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Institute for the Investigation of Irregular Internet Phenomena announced today that many Internet users are becoming infected by a new virus that causes them to believe without question every groundless story, legend, and dire warning that shows up in their In Box or on their browser. The Gullibility Virus, as it is called, apparently makes people believe and forward copies of silly hoaxes relating to cookie recipes, E-Mail viruses, taxes on modems, and get-rich-quick schemes...perhaps conspiracy theories should be included here "These are not just readers of tabloids or people who buy lottery tickets based on fortune cookie numbers," a spokesman said. "Most are otherwise normal people, who would laugh at the same stories if told to them by a stranger on a street corner." However, once these same people become infected with the Gullibility Virus, they believe anything they read on the Internet. "My immunity to tall tales and bizarre claims is all gone," reported one weeping victim. "I believe every warning message and sick child story my friends forward to me, even though most of the messages are anonymous." Another victim, now in remission, added, "When I first heard about Good Times, I just accepted it without question. After all, there were dozens of other recipients on the mail header, so I thought the virus must be true." It was a long time, the victim said, before she could stand up at a Hoaxes Anonymous meeting and stated, "My name is Jane, and I've been hoaxed." Now, however, she is spreading the word. "Challenge and check whatever you read," she says. Internet users are urged to examine themselves for symptoms of the virus, which include the following: * the willingness to believe improbable stories without thinking * the urge to forward multiple copies of such stories to others * a lack of desire to take 3 minutes to check to see if a story is true T.C. is an example of someone recently infected. He told one reporter, "I read on the Net that the major ingredient in almost all shampoos makes your hair fall out, so I've stopped using shampoo." When told about the Gullibility Virus, T.C. said he would stop reading e-mail, so that he would not become infected. Anyone with symptoms like these is urged to seek help immediately. Experts recommend that at the first feelings of gullibility, Internet users rush to their favorite search engine and look up the item tempting them to thoughtless credence. Most hoaxes, legends, and tall tales have been widely discussed and exposed by the Internet community. Courses in critical thinking are also widely available, and there is online help from many sources, including * Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability at http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html * Symantec Anti Virus Research Center at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html * McAfee Associates Virus Hoax List at http://www.mcafee.com/support/hoax.html * Dr. Solomons Hoax Page at http://www.drsolomons.com/vircen/hoax.html * The Urban Legends Web Site at http://www.urbanlegends.com * Urban Legends Reference Pages at http://www.snopes.com * Datafellows Hoax Warnings at http://www.Europe.Datafellows.com/news/hoax.htm Those people who are still symptom free can help inoculate themselves against the Gullibility Virus by reading some good material on evaluating sources, such as * Evaluating Internet Research Sources at http://www.sccu.edu/faculty/R_Harris/evalu8it.htm * Evaluation of Information Sources at http://www.vuw.ac.nz/,agsmith/evaln/evaln.htm * Bibliography on Evaluating Internet Resources at http://refserver.lib.vt.edu/libinst/critTHINK.HTM Lastly, as a public service, Internet users can help stamp out the Gullibility Virus by sending copies of this message to anyone who forwards them a hoax. Forward this message to all your friends right away! Don't think about it! This is not a chain letter! This story is true! Don't check it out! This story is so timely, there is no date on it! This story is so important, we're using lots of exclamation points!!! For every message you forward to some unsuspecting person, the Home for the Hopelessly Gullible will donate ten cents to itself. While for a bit, I liked our personality base, here are a few notes that I have made. 1) Looking at the cost of the personalities and their HR, we are hurting. Off the box we have Taki, Ukira, Chosai, Juppun, Iyojin. 3 of those personalities, you can't (unless the fix Juppun to the - that he was supposed to be) buy until you gain honor, and the 2 that you can get for honor. That means that almost every deck will be running a full compliment of Taki's and Iyojin's. This guarantees that for the first 2 turns, we will be buying gold. 2) I don't like Ukira. His ability is marginal to useless, and coupled with his high HR, if I use him it will be because I am running a tricks deck or because we have so many other over priced people. 3) It's sad when we go from having some of the top of the shugenja in the game to Chosai (who is amazing) and Shaitung (who is ok). Chosai who is our best, that Crane/Crab/Phoenix can use him better than we can. And this is all we have.... 4) I am sad to see that the best card ever made foe dueling (corrupt jade sliver) is not in the set (just a personal note). 5) It was amazing to see the number of people bitching about how Dragon was getting Uso. It's seems as if bitching loud enough gets you what you want. Taking a look at the card list, here are a list of personalities I would rather have anyday than have Uso. Yasuki Hachi (Daidoji Hachi), Kakita Kaiten, Akodo Tadenori (Ikoma Gunjin), Isawa Taeruko. Just to name a few. All of these have comparable gold cost and abilities to boot. Ok, and on the fly, here's a Gold Deck to tear apart. Iron Mountain Akodo Kaneka (the wind that lets you flush dynasty cards) Dynasty 3x Mirumoto Rosanjin (Taki) 3x Togashi Nyima (Iyojin) 3x Tamori Chosai 3x Mirumoto Temoru (Hitomi) 3x Hida Rohiteki 2x Hitomi Vedau (Kagetora) 1x Doji Reju Exp 2 1x Togashi Hoshi Exp 2 3x Gold Mines 3x Large Farms 3x Sanctified Temple 3x Silk Works 3x Jade Works 3x Sorrow's Path (2x and plains of Otosan Uchi) 1x Imperial Gift 1x Regions of Rokugan 1x Imperial Ambassadorship Fate 2x Block Supply Lines 2x Come One At A Time 2x Counter Attack 3x Snow Crane Tattoo 2x Crab Tattoo 2x Deeds, Not Words 2x Enough Talk 2x For the Empire 3x Iaijitsu Art 3x Iaijitsu Challenge 3x Iaijitsu Duel 3x Shame 2x In Search of the Future 2x Rallying Cry 2x Superior Tactics 1x Ring of Void 1x Ring of Earth 2x Walking the Way 1x Celestial Sword of the Dragon 2x Ryokan's Sword 2x Dragon's Claw Katana This is the beginnings of an Honorable/Military deck. One note though, Juppun only has a 5HR, which is the Starting on the Iron Mountain box. So he'd be boxable...if he didn't cost 8G. So, our only boxable peeps (Assuming we play Iron Mountain, since Kyuden Hitomi is coasteriffic until we get some more 0 and - HR peeps) are Taki and Iyojin (Rosanjin and Nyima). Chosai doesn't count, his HR is too high. So 2 boxable peeps. Not HORRID, but not good either. IIRC, Crane only has about 1 in clan boxable peep, so I don't weep too much on that one. OTOH, Crane is absurd. So, gentlemen, it looks like we'll be playing with Birth of the Sword in hopes of it coming up 1st turn. And Imperial Gift as well, if only for the free honor. Nevermind that whole "fetch a Celestial Sword" angle. :P Other Notes- I don't think we can really even TRY to run honor in gold from what I'm seeing. Our peeps are too expensive, and our average PH is only 2. Clans with cheaper peeps and higher PH will easily lap us. The only hope is dulling, which is dubious in its efficacy. Snow Crane tattoos would be a big help here. (Hrm...now I just need a playset of them). > 2) I don't like Ukira. His ability is marginal to useless, and coupled with > his high HR, if I use him it will be because I am running a tricks deck or > because we have so many other over priced people. I really don't care for him much at all either. With an HR of 8, they could at least give us Daini's PH of 3. Or an ability more universally useul. Fact is, Ukira's Focus bonus won't be winning that many duels, certainly none that a Snow Crane or two couldn't win, if one really must duel. > 3) It's sad when we go from having some of the top of the shugenja in the > game to Chosai (who is amazing) and Shaitung (who is ok). Chosai who is our > best, that Crane/Crab/Phoenix can use him better than we can. And this is > all we have.... Yeah, we either need Chosai to have a lower HR, or to possibly get a 6FH SH. Not that that will ever happen, but we can dream, can't we? In the mean time, we'll use Rohiteki. WHY was that abomination printed in Gold edition? WHY!? I'm so disgusted by the number of boxable for honor Crab shugenja in open, and the fact that one snuck into gold, amidst great outcry. > 4) I am sad to see that the best card ever made foe dueling (corrupt jade > sliver) is not in the set (just a personal note). I'm sad to see that half the best cards ever made for duelling are gone. Corrupt Jade Sliver, Togashi Yoshi, etc. And no Gennai for us. That's gonna take some serious getting used to. We go from having one of the most accelerated fate drawing/manipulation schemes in the game to having next to nothing. This does not make a happy Hakanin. All I can say is, we better get a SH with the "Bow to win the game" ability in Alpha or Bravo. > 5) It was amazing to see the number of people bitching about how Dragon was > getting Uso. It's seems as if bitching loud enough gets you what you want. > Taking a look at the card list, here are a list of personalities I would > rather have anyday than have Uso. Yeah, I guess that 3F is just too much for our clan to bear! But boxable for honor Shugenja is just what Crab needs..God, but Gold is already leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. Making me want to go play Shadowfist...It's quite irritating, not having the card base to play well in Open, and having enough of a card base that restricting myself to Gold legal is just as painful. > Ok, and on the fly, here's a Gold Deck to tear apart. > > Iron Mountain > Akodo Kaneka (the wind that lets you flush dynasty cards) > > Dynasty > > 3x Mirumoto Rosanjin (Taki) > 3x Togashi Nyima (Iyojin) > 3x Tamori Chosai > 3x Mirumoto Temoru (Hitomi) > 3x Hida Rohiteki > 2x Hitomi Vedau (Kagetora) > 1x Doji Reju Exp 2 > 1x Togashi Hoshi Exp 2 > > 3x Gold Mines > 3x Large Farms > 3x Sanctified Temple > 3x Silk Works > 3x Jade Works > > 3x Sorrow's Path (2x and plains of Otosan Uchi) > > 1x Imperial Gift > 1x Regions of Rokugan > 1x Imperial Ambassadorship > > Fate > 2x Block Supply Lines > 2x Come One At A Time > 2x Counter Attack > 3x Snow Crane Tattoo > 2x Crab Tattoo > 2x Deeds, Not Words > 2x Enough Talk > 2x For the Empire > 3x Iaijitsu Art > 3x Iaijitsu Challenge > 3x Iaijitsu Duel > 3x Shame > 2x In Search of the Future > 2x Rallying Cry > 2x Superior Tactics > 1x Ring of Void > 1x Ring of Earth > 2x Walking the Way > 1x Celestial Sword of the Dragon > 2x Ryokan's Sword > 2x Dragon's Claw Katana > > This is the beginnings of an Honorable/Military deck. Tear Away. Looks like a new flavor of DDD to me. Well, my first main criticism is that I'd toss the weapons. Ryokan's Sword is almost an okay price, but IIRC, Dragon's Claw Katana's are something around what...7G each? Way too much. As far as I can tell from looking at our personality spread, if we're trying to run honor in gold, we need to buy peeps full cost AND duel like mad to even have a hope of running right. And saddly, without free gold of any kind other than small farms, which are of dubious quality, we're gonna have to spend a lot of gold to get more gold, methinks. I imagine we'll pull at most one personality a turn while we spend our gold on...more gold as well. Think about it. An ideal first turn is some gold and some boxable peeps. Only problem is, we'll be running slowly without getting that gold. So ideally, we'd like to buy gold turn one, box a peep turn two and buy more gold with the turn 1 gold. By turn 3 we can start to hope to be able to MAYBE crank someone out at full cost, and continue to build our gold base. The only way I'd even consider using weapons is with something like Kaiu Forge, whereby they become free after an initial 5G investment. Even so, I'm not sure that'd be worth the gold cost. I'll be playing with a few SG deck designs myself in the next few days, so I guess we'll see then if they're any good, since they're one of the things I think I'd like to try out once. Speaking of holdings-I'm not sure that Silk works are that good a choice, they're SH+Holding, or two good Holdings just to bring out, and I don't know that we've got that gold to spare (not if we want to buy ANY personalities in the first 3 turns, and by then, military will be stampeding all over us) unless I missed a SH to 5G MRP somewhere... So, assuming we toss the weapons for now as an uneconomical investment, that leaves us with 4 cards of Fate space. My instincts tell me that more Walking the Way is king, especially since we have a slight problem in fate manipulation with not having access to things like Gennai or the Refuge of the Three Sisters. Of course, I am a combo-junky, so I love lots of fate manipulation in everything (I have a bad habit of playing old school enlightenment when I'm bored), and YMMV. But I think that there is a potential for good honor gains if we can make sure duelling our peeps is suicide. Then we can Iai challenge our foes into oblivion. That 7H hit is a lot more mean in Gold, so let's hope duelling is not further crippled by rumoured MRP to drop the loss to 4..I might also recommend a third Suptacs, just to be sure you have one on hand to bust the proverbial Sneak/Deadly. Thank god there's no storms in Gold... Another thing is, I don't see that a deck so tuned to defend would be able to go on offense well enough to pose significant military threat. Granted, we field respectable per-person force, but I'm still not convinced. And on that note, I'm not sure Rallying Cry is that much worth the inclusion. Counterattack certainly, but I doubt you'll be attacking often, and so I think the Rallying Cries would god to waste. OTOH, there is the fact that it would be nice to not bow the guy you attack the other honor runner with just so you can play Iai Duel... Anyways, that's my take for the now. I'll be signing off, and hopefully building some SG enlightenment, military, and (my personal favorite) Dueling Dishonor PK and testing them over the weekend. Good luck brothers, we're going to need it. Game 1: Lion I miraculously got to go first, got gold, he got gold, I got a person, he got a person, my person attacked and killed his, he played Duty to the clan to make Akodo Ginawa free. I thought my days were numbered. Fortunately, I got my cavalry and he didn't, and having Ginawa didn't improve his gold scheme. We eventually had a bit of a fight, he killed my biggest guy, I killed everyone but Ginawa, and a few turns later the game was over. I won a game with Dragon, and was impressed. better than I expected already. Game 2: Phoenix They were all so cheap, but my people were that little bit bigger, and with a large selection of charge, tattoos, purity, and Spearmen in my hand, every turn I threw some people at him. He killed off a couple, but in the end I had him down to 1 province, and he had some defenders. I thought he would get to 40 on his next turn if he had a person, and with Ningen Exp he was getting a better hand every turn. I didn't like my hand, but had no real choice. I had to attack. Ningen defended, I couldn't sneak, or I would have shot him, he played Come 1, and killed my Sukune. I puritied Uso, he killed a Kagetora, and I used the ability on my other kagetora, making all my people have more Chi than him. He favoured Iyojin with the Sword, leaving me with two people, but with only ningen to oppose me, that was more than enough to kill the province. 2 - 0 Game 3: Scorpion This was an unpleasant game against the guy who ended up winning the tourney. I got gold on turn 1, he got tangen, who in turn got eaten by Oni no Tsuburu. I thought 8F cavalry. That's bad, but at least he cant do the cavalry thing against me. I brought out a person. he played For the empire, duelled me, I struck, he poisoned me and killed a province. my turn, new person. His turn Iaijitsu Art, poisoned weapon, I die, he takes another province. I didn't really recover from that. 2-1 Game 4: Scorpion Not Again! This time we both killed a province early, then decided attacking was too dangerous. neither of us saw a rally. he got Sanctified's and I didn't, and he somehow stayed just ahead of me in honour. Eventually I got some temples too, and got to 40 the turn before him by attaching the sword. All his 3 Shosuro Taushi copied the force of my guy with the sword, and he attacked. I defended 1 province, and let him kill the other two. in the last battle, he had enough force to kill my army, most of whom were bowed anyway, but not the province. Phew!!! 3 - 1 Game 5: Crab This game was a walkover. His deck failed miserably, and I killed provinces that happened to have good cards in them. In the end, he only ever brought out anout 3 people. I was lucky. In his next game he proceeded to beat the living daylights out of the guy I lost to. You can't win them all. 4 - 1 Game 6: Lion If I could win this game, I would win, as the only player with only 1 loss. We both bring out some gold and some people. Once again, he gets Sanctifieds and I don't. I get him down to 2 provinces to my 3, but can't afford to wait. neither of us has any cavalry due to a mutually destructive battle earlier, but I do my weird stuff, tattoo some people, distribute my farmlands tokens, and attack with all but 1 person. I could take him. Unfortunately I made a mistake. I was going to leave uso, with two farmlands tokens, a spearman , a dragon tattoo, and a purity in hand. Alas, I tattooed Shaitung, and gave him the Dragon and the spearmen. He didn't defend, countered, I defended, and lost the battle, but not the province. His last card was a rally, which he used, then his people all got bigger because of Kaoku, letting him take all my provinces on his next turn. If I used Uso to defend instead, I could have used the Purity in my hand, making the battle a draw. I would have won. I had to change my mind and use Shaitung, didn't I. Oh well. 4 - 2 Three people now have two losses, so the scorpion player who beat me, having beat the other scorpion, too, wins, I place second, and the other scorpion comes third. Not bad for the "not so good" clans, If I should say so myself. The Deck obviously used Uso, before we were told that he is not in Gold after all, and it wouldn't work as well without him. Strength of purity was an important card. That said, not once did I bring Uso out on turn 1 in preference to gold, and that was probably good. The 3 honour I got for him was too important for that. First turn Hiruma Dojo, second turn Mirumoto Sukune with honour was the way to go. Anyway, here's the deck list. In retrospect I think I maybe should have used basic Hitomi rather than Iyojin, who honestly didn't do much, and played Imperial Census, but I didn't. Iron Mountain Dynasty: 41 3 Hitomi Iyojin 3 Hitomi Kagetora 3 Tamori Shaitung 3 Mirumoto Uso 3 Mirumoto Sukune (Cavalry who can shoot tacticians. the man is a god!) Mirumoto Uso Exp. 2 Farmlands 2 Crossroads Regions of Rokugan Imperial Gift Corruption of the Harmonies 3 Small Farm 3 Large Farm 3 Gold Mine 3 Jade Works 3 Hiruma Dojo 3 Sanctified Temple Fate: 40 3 Strength of Purity 3 Charge 3 Deadly Ground 1 Armor of Sun Tau 1 Contentious Terrain 3 Test of Courage 2 Confusion at Court 1 Scout 3 Spearmen 1 Warriors of the Great Climb 2 Walking the Way 3 Dragon Tattoo 3 Mountain tattoo 3 Superior Tactics 3 Sneak Attack 3 Rallying Cry 1 Ring of the Void 1 Celestial sword of the Dragon In retrospect, apart from the ring and the sword, nothing is really worth walking the way for. Sneaks, I suppose. I would take out the armour, the contentious and probably one of the confusions for something else. maybe Stand against the Waves or Overconfidence. Other than that it seemed solid. Of course, now that we don't have Uso anymore, purity becomes less good, and that makes Sukune less good. I'll have to think of something else. Sorry to babble on at such length. Hope some of you find something I have said useful.
